Unexpected Generosity

“Generosity: The habit of giving freely without expecting anything in return.” — Anonymous

My husband has taught me a lot about generosity without even knowing he’s done it. He hasn’t given me a book on generosity or told me how to do it, nor given me some sermonette about it. He lives it.

I started noticing his generosity early in our dating experience. He gave to people before they asked him for anything. On more than one occasion, I’ve watched him start a conversation with a homeless person, then buy them a meal, then converse with them. Then I’ve seen him give them a gift card with half a dozen meals on it.

Okay, I know my husband is an extrovert, so talking to a stranger is very comfortable for him. I’m also an extrovert, so my ability to talk to a stranger, even a homeless person, should be comfortable for me. I’ve learned. I’m still learning.

I’m learning that getting into their world is where I need to go. I’m certainly aware of my safety and surroundings, so I don’t get myself into a vulnerable place. With all that being considered, I then move into the space with the person. Yeah, it seems strange. Odd.

Yet, as someone who lives as a Christian, these moments are opportunities for me to live out what I believe. A“Little Christ” is one of the definitions of a Christian. So, I’ve decided that in ALL my interactions, I will move to live as a reflection of my beliefs….doing what Jesus would do….how about you?

Be on the lookout this week, so you can be generous to someone. Surprise someone with unexpected generosity. Give to someone without expecting anything in return. Those can be really fun moments! Have a great week Living the Encouraged Life.
