Will you let Hope rise again in you?
July 1, 2019
Hope. It’s an interesting word. The dictionary defines it as “a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.” I’ve lived with my right hand (my writing hand) not functioning for fifteen years. My M.S. causes it to shake and be unable to hold a writing instrument (pen, pencil) or silverware. I learned over the years how to function without it. I’d ask a family member to fill out forms for me. They’d also write checks for me. I’d ask a nurse to fill out medical forms for me. I’d ask a stranger to fill out a form for me. Delegation. I was always a good delegator as a Principal, so I just used my delegation skills to get things written for me.
I had given up any hope for my right hand to ever work again. Then, I started following some research on the Neufit device, which was having some positive effects on some M.S. folks. It’s similar to a tens unit, but unlike a tens unit, which works on Alternating Current (A.C.), it utilizes Direct Currents (D.C.). I was a bit pessimistic when having an electrode attached to my right arm as I placed my hand into some water in a bucket with an electrode in it. My P.T. assured me I wouldn’t be electrocuted.
My grip strength had been measured prior to utilizing the device. My strength in each hand measured at “20 and 25.” After utilizing the device, my grip strength measured in at “40 and 45.” My right hand had improved by over half its original strength and was now my stronger hand. My brain was faced with remapping my life story of “no use” with my right hand to hope for a new day. “My right hand is getting better with use and therapy.” I had a choice to make. Would I continue to delegate my right hand to non-use and others helping me or would I begin to lean into my new right hand, hoping for more usage with each therapy session?
Have you given up on something you once hoped for? Something you prayed for years to see change? You have a choice: to continue your narrative about the issue or reframe it into a hopeful outcome. A new day will come. It seems to show up every morning regardless of my thinking, my attitude, and my hope. So, with this new day, choose how you will hope.
