Church Holy Cows (pt. 1)

This post is relatable for Christians or for anyone who went regularly to church growing up…

The church background from which one comes, whether or not one’s parents were Christians, the place and time of one’s birth and the broader culture in which one is raised, all serve to shape our beliefs and desires and how we approach the Bible far more than we imagine. The resulting differences in certain interpretations are thus not the problem of the Bible per se but rather of those who approach and read it through differing colored lens.

“Holy Cows” are items within each particular church denomination that are considered foundational for that denomination. They are the tenets within the particular denomination that are considered cornerstones for their expression of faith. Holy cows have split church’s, families and friends over the years. With over 250,000 Christian Sects worldwide it’s a clear example of different Holy Cows. Some examples are:

  • Baptism

  •  Sabbath day of worship

  •  Women in Pastoral roles

  •  Gifts of the Spirit—-specifically tongues

  •  Homosexuality or sexuality issues
