Church Holy Cows (pt. 2)

continued from last week…

  • Musical instruments in worship

  • Interpretations: include literalists, historical-critical method, KJV only, inspired, inerrant, authoritative, metaphorical, Pervasive Interpretive Pluralism, interpretive pluralism, universalism, free-spirited antinomian, personal past experience, etc

  •  Miracles

  •  Prayer

  •  Transubstantiation: communion elements literally considered the body & blood of Christ (Protestants vs Catholics on this one)

So, where do we go from having so many interpretations of the Bible? So many opinions? So many feelings? I suggest that we slow down in the defense of our position and ponder what we may learn from another person.

Many of you know that I was a pastor’s wife for over twenty years. It gave me the opportunity to hone my skills in a multitude of areas; including active listening. When I was really struggling with my Multiple Sclerosis, listening, rather than talking, (I sounded drunk) was where I felt most comfortable.

So, consider asking the other person open-ended questions. Listen. Then ask them some more open-ended questions. Then repeat the process over and over again. You’ll be amazed by what you learn, relearn and ponder by doing this.

We can make this life rich and full by leading with curiosity in our life. We can welcome and love others who are a different color, shape and interpretation of the Bible than ours. We really can coexist with others who are different from us. Try the open-ended listening and tell us what you learned, are relearning or pondering in the days to come.
